ORANGEBURG, SC — The Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a criminal domestic violence incident that ended in a fatal shooting Sunday.
Officers were called to a home on Woodford Road, North in Orangeburg around 1:37 a.m. after a 24-year-old man had been shot, Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said.
Sheriff Ravenell said officers met with a 23-year-old woman who told them she and the victim began arguing over paperwork in the woman’s purse that listed the man as a wanted suspect in another jurisdiction.
The couple began arguing, and the woman attemped to call her mother. Sheriff Ravenell said woman ran out of the house, but the man drug her back inside and began hitting her on the back of the head and threw her on the floor.
The man’s grandfather came out of his bedroom and told him to stop hitting the woman and to leave. Police say that is when the woman found a handgun and fired one shot, which struck a cordless drill.
Sheriff Ravenell said the man charged at the woman, grabbed her and was shot in the abdomen.
The Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate.
