No charges will be filed in fatal Orangeburg Co. shooting

— A 24-year-old North woman will not be charged for fatally shooting her boyfriend, the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.

Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenel said the evidence of the case — including evidence at the scene, autopsy results and witness statements — suggested the woman was defending herself.

Ravenel said domestic disputes ranked second among the more than 73,000 calls for service across the county in 2013.

“This is an example of the domestic violence that is taking place in so many households in our county and we must work collectively to change this epidemic,” Ravenel said.

“We can no longer be silent about the physical, mental, and emotional abuse taking place in relationships in this county. We must take steps now to improve a victim's ability to get the resources necessary to better manage and eventually leave these relationships."
