Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office cracking down on registered sex offenders

akflanagan@thestate.comFebruary 6, 2014

— The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office is cracking down on the 144 active registered sex offenders living in Kershaw County.

Offenders are required to report to the Sheriff’s office either annually, semi-annually or quarterly to have their picture and fingerprints taken and to verify their current residence and place of employment.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, some of the sex offenders have been providing false information and are not informing authorities when they move, which is why they are cracking down.

Deputies arrested George Obryant King on Jan. 15 on charges of failure to register (2nd offense). King was convicted in 1998 for committing a lewd act on a child under the age of 16.

On the same day, deputies arrested Christopher Lee Winkler for failure to register (1st offense). Winkler was arrested in 2002 for criminal sexual conduct with a minor between the ages of 11-14.

King and Winkler are currently being held at the Kershaw County Detention Center.

The penalty for failure to register as a sex offender (1st offense) is up to 366 days incarceration or up to a $1,000 fine or both. Second offense, which is a General Sessions court offense, carries a mandatory sentence of 366 days.

According to the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office there are active warrants on Carolina Wayne Wilson and Kenneth Lyles for failure to register as a sex offender.

Anyone with information about Wilson or Lyles should contact the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office at 803-425-1512.
