Steve Benjamin

Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin has been named to a website’s list of 100 people making history.

TheGrio.com, founded in 2009, is directed at an African-American audience offering a range of new and video content geared toward its audience. It is a division of the cable channel MSNBC.

Benjamin was named to the website’s annual list of people making history in fields that range from business, science and education to media and pop culture. "I’m humbled to be recognized among trailblazers like Colin Powell, Harry Bellafonte, Congresswoman Gwen Moore and my friend Rick Wade," Benjamin said in a statement.

The mayor was recognized for his focus on fighting crime, creating jobs and new opportunities for young people, according to a news release from the city of Columbia.
