Fatal accident Saturday closes northbound lanes on I-77 at Percival Road

February 8, 2014

— One person was killed Saturday afternoon on I-77 at Percival Road.

Headed north on I-77 around 4:50pm, the driver lost control of the car, swerving off the right side of the road, back to the left, to the right and to the left again, ultimately hitting a guard rail and flipping the car upside-down, Sgt Bob Beres of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said. The driver, who has not been identified, was not wearing a seat belt, Beres said.

All northbound lanes of I-77 at Percival Road were closed as emergency personnel from the Columbia Fire department and Columbia police responded to the accident.

Traffic on northbound I-77 was backed up several miles into the evening.
