— Richland County coroner Gary Watts on Sunday identified the traffic fatality on Saturday that blocked traffic on I-77 for several hours on Saturday as a Columbia man.

Leroy Alexander Foust, 56, of Rhett Road, died at the scene from injuries he received in the single-car motor vehicle collision, Watts said.

The incident happened around 4:50 p.m. near mile marker 15 and Percival Road on I-77, just outside Fort Jackson.

Foust, who was headed north, lost control of his car, swerved off the right side of the road, back to the left, to the right and to the left again, ultimately hitting a guard rail and flipping the car upside-down, Sgt Bob Beres of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

Foust was not wearing a seat belt, Beres said.

All northbound lanes of I-77 at Percival Road were closed as emergency personnel from the Columbia Fire department and Columbia police responded to the accident.

Traffic on northbound I-77 was backed up several miles into the evening

What caused Foust to lose control of his car has not yet been made public.

The Highway Patrol continues to investigate.
