C.A. Johnson girls no match for Lamar

February 18, 2014

C.A. Johnson had a shot at attaining title bids in Region 3-1A basketball on Monday night.

The Green Hornet boys took advantage with a rousing 85-50 win over visiting Lamar to finish in a first-place tie with Great Falls, necessitating a special playoff game on Wednesday at Camden for the region’s No. 1 postseason seed.

The CAJ girls, however, dropped a 42-23 decision to Lamar to finish with a 6-2 region record and a No. 2 seed in the state playoffs that begin on Thursday. The Green Hornets (9-12 overall) have a first-round home game on tap against the No. 3 seed from Region 4.

Lamar (9-12, 7-0) can completed a perfect run in the region championship race with a win Tuesday against Lewisville.

In the first meeting of the teams on Feb. 6, the Hornets had no answers for Lamar senior point guard Ya’shai Pauley and junior forward Heylan Anderson. Pauley had 14 points and four assists while Anderson rang up 20 points and 12 rebounds in the 50-40 Silver Foxes win.

The duo was just as good in the rematch. Anderson tallied 19 points and had a 7-for-7 showing at the free throw line. Pauley had 10 points and eight assists.

Lamar made a habit of late runs in the first two quarters to establish a 26-16 halftime lead. The Silver Foxes scored the last six points of the first quarter, and the final eight points of the second. For good measure, Lamar accounted for the last five points of the third and the first eight points of the fourth to turn it into a rout.

Demeatrius Bryant and Ilyssa Booker led the Green Hornets with seven and six points, respectively.
