Childress

— Martha Childress plans to return to the University of South Carolina’s Columbia campus this fall.

The 18-year-old is planning to share an apartment with some friends, according to her uncle, Jim Carpenter.

Childress has spent the past four months recovering from her gunshot wound, first in Georgia, then in South Carolina, and taking classes online.

Currently, she is living in Simpsonville, in Greenville County, undergoing rehabilitation and taking several USC courses via computer. USC has helped arrange courses so she can participate long distance.

Although wheelchair-bound, she is also exploring getting a car that she can drive.

Childress has been especially moved and helped by the outpouring of support from the USC community, friends and even strangers, Carpenter said.

“That’s been a real big factor in her recovery – seeing that people care – both by their expressions of love and their tangible ways of helping,” Carpenter said.
