COLUMBIA, SC — The latest addition to Riverbanks Zoo’s bachelor gorilla group is on public display after being given several months to grow accustomed to his new surroundings.
The zoo announced Thursday that 23-year-old Patrick, who moved to Riverbanks from the Dallas Zoo in October, is now fully adjusted to his new home.
Patrick joins Chaka (29), Mike (22) and Ajari (13) in the bachelor group.
“The introduction process has gone extremely well,”" said John Davis, curator of mammals at the zoo. “Patrick is full of personality and loves to interact with his keepers and the public. We are excited to have him at Riverbanks.”
While Patrick has become comfortable in his surroundings, he’s still not socializing to a large degree with the others in the group. Because his mother neglected him, Patrick was hand-raised by zookeepers and prefers “a more private existence,” Davis said.
While Patrick has contact with the others through sight and smell, he lives separate from Chaka, Mike and Ajari at the Gorilla Base Camp.
