Sheriff: Woman's body found in homicide case

February 26, 2014

— Kids playing on a dirt road, running along electrical lines near Elgin, discovered the body of a young woman on Wednesday.

“This was obviously a homicide,” Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said.

UPDATE: Teen victim in Wednesday's homicide identified as recent Lugoff-Elgin graduate.

The father of one of the boys called the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Department around 3:30 p.m. to report what the children told him.

Investigators found the body of a white female between 18-22 years-of-age off White Pond Road near the upscale Haig’s Creek subdivision of Elgin. Authorities believe they know who the victim is – identification was found near the body – but a positive ID has not been made, Matthews said. As authorities were investigating the scene, a missing person report was filed, Matthews said.

Although a lot of evidence has been collected by SLED forensics investigators where the body was found, it’s not clear where the woman was killed. She was last seen in the company of a male before midnight Tuesday night, Matthews said. Authorities would like to talk to him.

Investigators located her car parked at a Waffle House on S.C. 601 at Interstate 20.

An autopsy will be performed Thursday to determine cause of death, Matthews said.
