Snow-forgiveness days snowballing in the House, even as Senate tries to rein them in

The good news from this week is that the Senate decided not to cheat kids out of as much school time as the House wanted to.

In fact, there are some districts where children will be able to attend an entire 180 days of school this year. That’s because the Senate amended the House’s “forgive up to five snow days” bill to require schools to operate on the three snow days they already have built into their schedules before they start not holding classes.

The Senate even stood firm on Thursday, when some senators started trying to eat away at this provision, with Sen. Brad Hutto declaring that “all school districts should be on notice that we intend our children to be in school to learn.”

The bad news is the no-school movement that’s snowballing across the lobby. My very quick count is that on Wednesday and Thursday alone, House members introduced and/or approved 16 measures to forgive school days in individual counties, without the requirement that districts first use the snow-days built into their calendars. The House had previously approved similar measures for other counties. You can read though this week’s actions, pasted below from the Wednesday and Thursday House Journals.

We explained the problem with forgiving these days in this editorial.

There is hope, though: Senate Judiciary Chairman Larry Martin assured me the Senate would not even take up these measures. We can only hope that’s more than wishful thinking on his part.
