February 27, 2014

BOYS

CARDINAL NEWMAN (18-9) vs. LAURENCE MANNING ACADEMY (21-11)

WHEN: 5 p.m. Friday

WHERE: Sumter County Civic Center

Cardinal Newman top players: Charles Smith (18.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg); Joe Armstrong (9.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg); Zakki Parker (5.9 ppg, 3.8 apg, 1.8 spg)

Laurence Manning Academy top players: Shakaei Green (15.5 ppg, 6.6 rpg); Vaughnte Anderson (10.7 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 2.2 spg); Rashaad Robinson (10.1 ppg)

Storyline: Defending champion Cardinal Newman turned in its most consistent performance since the injury loss of key man John Ragin in Wednesday’s quarterfinal win against Heathwood Hall. LMA, the 2012 SCISA champ, is also peaking at the right time after an up-and-down season.

GIRLS

HEATHWOOD HALL (21-4) vs. HILTON HEAD CHRISTIAN (20-4)

WHEN: 6:30 p.m. Friday

WHERE: Sumter County Civic Center

Heathwood Hall top players: A’ja Wilson (34.4 ppg, 14.5 rpg, 2.1 apg, 3.1 spg, 5.1 bpg); Victoria Dickerson (11.8 ppg, 2.3 apg); Gadson Lefft (10.7 ppg, 7.7 rpg).

Hilton Head Christian top players: Macee Tamminen (15.0 ppg, 5.0 apg); Ziaira Doe (18.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg); Andy Anderson (11.0 5.0 spg)

Storyline: Both teams have at least 20 wins but that’s where the similarity ends. Heathwood Hall has crushed SCISA foes by an average of 38.1 points. HHC didn’t win its region championship. The Highlanders should have no trouble advancing to the state tournament title game for the second year in a row.
