Former Richland Co. councilwoman Newman passes away

Staff ReportsFebruary 28, 2014

— Former Richland County councilwoman Susie Newman passed away Wednesday after a long bout with cancer.

Newman served two stints on council between the mid-1970s and mid-1990s. She twice lost races for countywide office of auditor.

The 1912 sinking of the Titanic was known as a fascination of Newman’s. In 1996, she was one of 1,500 people who journeyed on a boat in an attempt to see part of the historic ship’s hull raised.

``We had a memorial service when we got there,” she told The State in 1996. “You had the feeling of being in a cemetery, it was so reverential.''

According to her obituary in Friday’s newspaper, there will be a private memorial service and her body will be donated to USC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Richland County Sheriff’s Foundation, the Harriett Hancock Center or Camp Discovery at His Acres.
