Club Bananas on Decker Blvd.

— A man was shot to death in a parking lot at a Decker Boulevard club just outside Columbia city limits early Thursday morning.

When deputies responding to a shots fired complaint arrived at Club Bananas around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, they found the victim lying in the parking lot with “multiple gunshot wounds” to the upper body, Richland County Sgt. Curtis Wilson said. County emergency medical services workers were called to the scene, but the victim was dead.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Luther Jermaine Mitchell, 35, of Columbia.

Wilson said investigators believe a female exited the club, at 1723 Decker Boulevard and about 300 yards from I-77, and noticed a man standing near her car.

According to Wilson, the two got into a verbal and physical altercation when another man, who they believe to be the woman’s boyfriend, came out of the club and saw them.

The two men got into a physical altercation and shortly after shots were fired, Wilson said.

Wilson said the investigation is ongoing, but police believe they know who they are looking for.
