Preview: Dreher baseball

March 6, 2014

Dreher is looking forward to another successful baseball season under veteran coach Pete Guyton. Five starters in the field and one rotation pitcher return from a team that went 17-8 overall, 6-4 in tough Region 4-3A.

“Strong senior leadership is our biggest strength,” said Guyton. “Our pitching and defense hopefully will keep us competitive. The biggest concern is the hitting.”

Dreher expects to be strong up the middle with the return of catcher Ben Herring, second baseman Seth Kays and center fielder Harris Courson. Guyton has high hopes for junior Alex Jeter, the new shortstop with the perfect shortstop name.

Senior left fielder Taylor Cotton, junior third baseman Grayson Stiglebauer and senior pitcher Willie Lee Pauling are also part of the team’s veteran core.

Junior Tyler Fleming, the projected starter at first base, is another newcomer to watch, said Guyton.

Dreher opens the expanded Region 4 schedule on March 11 at Memorial Stadium against Lower Richland.
