Friday letters: City hampered by government form

March 7, 2014

— I have observed Columbia City Council for the past 45 years. Those who voted in our last city election to reject a strong mayor have ensured that we will continue to have one fiasco after another.

I believe that individually all of our City Council members are fine men and women. But within the current system, each one seeks to maintain his own little kingdom and power.

I spent 30 years working in South Carolina’s criminal justice system, and I know all of the law enforcement representatives who served on the city’s police chief search committee. Their personal character and knowledge of law enforcement is beyond reproach. I think they know a little more about who should be considered to be our police chief than one or two City Council members.
