Man faces charges in Columbia grocery store theft

— The suspect in a grocery store burglary turned himself in after seeing a media report about his crime.

Andre Ashley, 49, was charged Thursday with burglary and larceny, according to a news release from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department Saturday.

Sheriff Leon Lott alleges at 3:30 a.m. Feb. 12, the suspect threw an object through the front glass doors of the Piggly Wiggly, 6325 N. Main St., then proceeded to take multiple cartons of cigarettes and cigars valued at $1,200.

Ashley was taken to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
