— A 2-year-old girl hit on the head with a dumbbell Tuesday has died, and a Beaufort County woman is now wanted on a charge of homicide by child abuse, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office announced.

LaQuana Chisolm, 26, was watching her three children and her boyfriend’s daughter at the man’s home in St. Helena Island while he was at work, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. At about 7:30 p.m., Chisolm struck the toddler, Phylicia Garry, on the head with a weighted dumbbell, causing severe trauma, the release said.

Chisolm did not seek medical help or tell anyone the toddler was injured, the Sheriff’s Office said. When a relative of the child came home just after 10 p.m., she found the unconscious toddler lying on the couch making unusual noises, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Garry was rushed to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, then flown to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where she died about noon Thursday, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Chisolm initially told deputies the toddler was injured when she fell off a bed, according to the Sheriff’s Office. She later told officers she struck the child with a dumbbell while exercising, the release said.

Before the child’s death, Chisolm was charged Wednesday with unlawful conduct toward a child and released from the Beaufort County Detention Center that afternoon on a $50,000 bond, according to the jail log.

Investigators are searching for Chisolm to arrest her on the upgraded charge of homicide by child abuse.
