Preview: Irmo baseball

March 9, 2014

Irmo’s youth movement continues this spring, but veteran coach Ray Canady hopes the bottom line will be more rewarding than last season’s 3-16 record and a last place finish in Region 4-4A.

“We could start as many as five sophomores and one freshman,” said Canaday. “But some of those kids gained a lot of experience last season and despite the youth we are working hard to improve every day. We don’t have any dominant arms, but our pitching and defense should give us a chance to stay close enough to make use of our short game.”

The obvious concern is the team’s ability to score enough runs to make a difference.

Senior second baseman Andrew Peterson, junior catcher Lucas White, junior pitcher-shortstop Nick Paschall and sophomore outfielder Carter Sherr are the Yellow Jackets’ key returning veterans.

Senior outfielder Alex Galan is back after missing the 2013 season with an injury.

Junior Benny Trefscar, sophomore Grant Robertson and Nick Leslie and freshman Nolan Burdette are promising newcomers.

Irmo opens the regular season on March 12 at River Bluff.
