Monday letters: Let’s vote on Bull Street

March 10, 2014

The Babcock Building on the S.C. Department of Mental Health campus along Bull Street is on the National Register of Historic Places.

ERIK CAMPOS — The State

— If Columbia Mayor Benjamin is so anxious to have this unnecessary ballpark and infrastructure at the old Bull Street property, let him pay for it. If he’s not willing to do that, let developer Bob Hughes and minor league owner Jason Freier pay for it.

We are not a wealthy, booming city. We have too many closing businesses, homeless people, people living below the poverty level, and yet there are those who want to spend money on something that is not necessary.

And who would be willing to buy an upscale home near where a ballpark allegedly would attract tons of people who would drive through their neighborhood? You don’t see any such developments near Williams-Brice Stadium or USC’s baseball park.

I vote to throw out the plan and put a referendum on a ballot so those impacted by the costs can have a say.
