Columbia city councilman Runyon holding presser to propose that sheriff take over police department

— Columbia city council member Cameron Runyan, joined by community representatives, will propose this morning that Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott take over the city police force.

Runyan will make his announcement at 10 a.m. at a press conference in front of the Richland County courthouse on Main Street.

The announcement comes as city manager Teresa Wilson is in the final stages of a hunt for a new police chief.

Interim police chief Ruben Santiago is not among the finalists that Wilson is considering.

In recent years, the police department has been headed by numerous police chiefs. Finding and keeping the right person has bedeviled city officials for years.

Veteran State reporter Clif LeBlanc will be at Runyan’s press conference and file a report.
