MARY ANN CHASTAIN — AP

— Isn’t it a bit hypocritical for Gov. Nikki Haley to fight for federal military dollars when she resolutely refuses to expand federal Medicaid?

I could be cynical and say that perhaps she is being consistent in that she likes to support policy that results in people dying, whether through war or lack of health care. But I’d rather be more positive and ask why, if she can see the value in accepting federal military dollars to protect our citizens and boost our economy, can she not also see the value of accepting federal Medicaid dollars to protect our citizens?

Healthy citizens, who are not overly burdened with the costs of medical bills, are more likely to be able to focus their energy on finding and keeping jobs and supporting the education of their children.

Seems like a win-win to me. All of these things result in a healthier economy and a happier citizenry.
