A confrontation at the council meeting on March 10 led to a scuffle between law officers and a council member.

THE STATE NEWSPAPER

— Batesburg-Leesville residents still are buzzing about a scuffle involving some town leaders that occurred on the March 10 Town Council meeting.

Town police removed Councilman Steve Cain from the session after angry exchanges with Mayor Rita Crapps.

Crapps ordered the ejection, saying it was necessary to prevent a disruption from evolving into chaos.

Cain has said little beyond that he was challenging what he saw as an attempt to squelch dissent form those skeptical of plans to increase sewage disposal from an industrial area being developed.

Crapps and Cain are long-time political foes who faced off in a mayoral election Nov. 5 that she won.
