LEXINGTON COUNTY — An elementary school student was left on a bus for six hours Monday after going unnoticed by the bus driver and an aide.
Following a morning route from homes to school, the bus was parked and left around 7:30 a.m. at Pelion High School apparently with the child on board, according to a statement from Lexington District One spokeswoman Mary Beth Hill. The child was not discovered until six hours later, when the driver returned to begin the afternoon bus route at 1:30 p.m.
Immediately, transportation staff took the child to the elementary school. A school nurse and staff members took care of the child while the principal and transportation officials contacted a parent.
The parent came to the school, met with the principal and transportation officials, and picked up her child.
The driver and the aide have been placed on leave pending the investigation.
"The district takes any incident like this very seriously, and we regret that this has occurred," the statement said. "The district continues to investigate this incident very carefully and thoroughly. Our primary concern is always the health and safety of our students."
