Thursday letters: Taxpayers foot Medicaid bill

March 20, 2014

— Carl Zwerling, in his Feb. 16 letter (“Keep pressure on Gov. Haley”), stated that 100 percent of the cost of expanding Medicaid for South Carolina would be paid for the government through 2016 and 90 percent thereafter. I would like to correct him. He needs to remember the U.S. government has no money, the taxpayers would pay 100 percent through 2016 and 90 percent thereafter.

I hope Gov. Haley does not accept the expanded Medicaid in South Carolina. I have no desire to pay any more taxes. I do not mind giving a hand-up for a short period, but there are too many people making a way of life by having the working population take care of them; it is time to get the fraud out of all the handouts and make people work. That is the American way. There will always be the rich and the not so rich, but anyone can make a living; it may not be doing a job they like, but that is OK.
