Friday letters: There are just too many people

March 21, 2014

If you can’t see the problem just by looking around, if you can’t feel the friction building up and the pressure increasing from too many people, then please consider the following:

It took all of human history up until about the year 1800 for the world’s population to reach 1 billion. Now you and I may argue over just when human history began — was it millions of years ago or a few hundred thousand years ago? Whichever yardstick you prefer, you have to agree that it took a very, very long time to put that first billion people on the planet. Do you know how long it took to add the last billion? About 12 years.

If this statistic doesn’t at least worry you, then there is something very badly wrong.
