Tuesday around the diamond

March 24, 2014

Tuesday’s top games on the diamond, weather permitting:

Baseball

Airport at Gilbert

Defending Lower State and Region 5-3A champion Airport (3-6, 3-1) has been scuffling this season, and needs a win to keep from falling two games off the pace in the conference ... Gilbert (8-0, 2-0) starts a big early season region week at home against the defending champs and hit the road on Friday to face Strom Thurmond, which defeated Airport, 6-2, on Friday.

Spring Valley at Blythewood

The winner stays within one game of Lugoff-Elgin in Region 4-4A. Spring Valley (3-5, 1-1) bounced back from a 3-0 loss to Lugoff-Elgin last week to even its conference record with a 2-1 win over Ridge View on Friday. Blythewood took a 7-3 hit at Lugoff-Elgin on Friday that brought and end to its 34-game region winning streak that began in 2011. The Bengals did not hit well, or play good defense in the loss.

Chapin at River Bluff

Chapin (2-4, 1-1) has not played since its 2-1 loss at A.C. Flora on March 14. The Eagles will be, if nothing else, well rested in their return to action against the first-year Gators who secured their first Region 4-3A win and handed Dreher its first conference setback on Friday, 2-1.

Fairfield Central at Pelion

Pelion (5-4, 3-0) will find out if it has a true threat in Region 3-2A this season when the Griffins come calling. If the Panthers prevailed with ease again, they have a great chance to run the table again in this baseball-poor region.

Softball

North Augusta at Dutch Fork

Dutch Fork (11-3, 3-1) takes on a traditionally strong foe in a key Region 5-4A game. The Silver Foxes are coming off a busy week that featured seven games in four days, including a first region loss to Lexington and a 4-1 showing at a tournament hosted by Byrnes.

Spring Valley at Blythewood

The school district rivals shared the Region 4-4A pennant last season. A three-team race for the 2014 title is shaping up with Lugoff-Elgin included, but Spring Valley must win to keep from falling two games off the pace. The Vikings have already lost its first meeting with the L-E Demons. Blythewood is fresh from a classic 2-1 win at L-E on Friday.

Airport at Gilbert

It’s an early showdown in Region 5-3A between the visiting Eagles (9-2, 3-0) under first-year coach Kathy Jackson and the host Indians (7-3, 2-0) of veteran coach Reuben Eargle. Both teams have been hot coming out of the Wildcat Invitational tournament. Gilbert went 3-0 last week, including a 5-4 win over tough Midland Valley. Airport was even better, going 4-0 with three region wins.
