Lexington-Richland 5 Superintendent Steve Hefner recently was named one of two Outstanding Superintendents for 2014 by the S.C. Athletic Administrators Association.
Hefner was nominated by athletics directors from Chapin, Dutch Fork and Irmo high schools for “his vision to improve athletic opportunities and facilities for all district high schools.”
He will be formally honored during the group’s Spring Conference for Athletics with Lee County Schools Superintendent Wanda Andrews.
“Dr. Hefner believes that students should have access to high quality athletic programs,” said Reggie Dean, Lexington-Richland 5’s director of secondary education who also oversees the district’s sports programs. “His vision for excellence in academics, athletics, the arts and community service provided the framework for improvements in athletic programs across the district.”
The S.C. Athletic Administrators Association represents public school athletics directors statewide.
Tops in her class
Lugoff-Elgin Middle School’s Karen Bullard has been named Kershaw County School District’s 2014 Principal of the Year.
Bullard, who has served as the school’s principal since 2010, was selected after a vote of school and district administrators.
Under Bullard’s leadership, Lugoff-Elgin was the first middle school in South Carolina to receive the national Schools to Watch honor, and has since received the award twice more. The distinction recognizes outstanding academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity and organizational structure.
“Mrs. Bullard is a true professional who cares deeply about young people,” said Mary Anne Byrd who works for the district and is current president of the school’s PTO. “Her leadership has helped to create a high-performing learning environment for all students. We are fortunate to have her as the principal of Lugoff-Elgin Middle.”
