— A Tuesday argument between neighbors over a missing bottle of brandy left one man dead and another in jail.

Jeffrey Dana Andrews, 50, of Sumter has been charged with murder after deputies say he shot a 26-year-old Sumter man following a fight over a missing bottle of alcohol at about 10 p.m. Tuesday.

According to an incident report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, the two men started arguing, which led to pushing and hitting. Andrews told deputies he picked up a black handgun and told Shamarr Howell to leave. Both Andrews and Howell live on Murphy Street.

Andrews told deputies he was simply defending himself.

“I told him several times to leave,” he told deputies. “When you tell a man to leave your home and they don’t then you have the right to protect yourself.”
