— Police are investigating a home fire that claimed the life of a 12-year-old Andrews early Saturday morning, police said.

The boy was alone in the home when the fire started around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carrie Cuthbertson said.

According to a police press release, firefighters responded to the mobile home at 10 James Drive in Andrews around 1:30 a.m. and discovered the boy.

The boy’s family said they recently moved to a new home and did not know why the boy was at that location, police said. The boy attended a birthday party Friday, but did not return home afterward and did not answer calls from his mother.

Investigation showed the boy returned to the home on James Drive instead of his new home without his family’s knowledge, police said.

The incident remains under investigation.
