Tuesday around the diamond

March 31, 2014

There are only a few quality match-ups on the Midlands baseball and softball scene on Tuesday.

Baseball

Richland NE at Blythewood

It’s a first place showdown in Region 4-4A. RNE (6-5, 3-1) has been on a roll since opening the region campaign with a 1-0 loss to Ridge View. Since then, the Cavaliers have won four in a row, three of them conference games. The Cavs made their move last week, knocking off first-place Lugoff-Elgin 2-1 followed by a 5-1 success against Spring Valley. Ryne Maness pitched a complete-game win against L-E and knocked in the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning. Zach Cumlich fired another complete-game gem against Spring Valley. Blythewood (7-4, 2-1) blanked Spring Valley, 8-0, and out-slugged White Knoll, 10-8, in a non-region affair last week after seeing its 34-game, three-year region winning streak come to an end with a loss to Lugoff-Elgin on March 21.

Airport at Brookland-Cayce

Two schuffling teams look to get back on track in Region 5-3A. Defending region champion Airport stands at 5-7 overall, 4-2 in conference matters. The Eagles were dumped 8-3 last week by Gilbert in a game that could have put them right back in the pennant race. Now, it’s an uphill battle and the Eagles will be needing some outside help. Brookland-Cayce (5-5, 2-3) continued its tepid ways last week – beating Midland Valley before becoming Swansea’s first region victim of the year, 6-5.

Aiken at Dutch Fork

Lexington is humming along atop the Region 5-3A standings. Dutch Fork (9-3 overall) and Aiken are two of three teams with two conference losses behind the front-running Wildcats. This game is big in the chase for second place, if not the pennant.
