— One person has been hospitalized after a fire Wednesday morning at the Budget Inn near the Bush River Road exit of I-26 north of Columbia.

The person’s condition is unknown.

Also unknown is the cause of the blaze, which started around 8 a.m., said Columbia Fire Department spokesman Brick Lewis.

When units of the Columbia and Irmo fire departments arrived on scene, they found smoke coming from the roof of the two-story motel, which is located at 316 Zimalcrest Dr.

After putting the fire out, firefighters observed that smoke damage was throughout the second floor.

The fire appear to have started in one room and was confined to that room, Lewis said.

The Richland County Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the fire’s cause.
