Columbia, SC — In his March 18 letter (“Teach creationism alongside evolution”), Fred Kerr refers to the thousands of God-fearing Christians who pay taxes as evidence that creationism is just as sound for science classes as evolution.
Does he support the teaching other religions’ creation stories? There are more sacred texts that support the notion of the Cosmic Egg (Greek, Egyptian, Chinese, etc.) than the Judeo-Christian story of the Garden of Eden. If we’re talking about fair play, shouldn’t we devote a few lessons to each of those?
If creationists choose to believe sacred text over physical evidence, I can only agree to disagree. But those beliefs have as little place in science class as chemistry experiments do in church.
