22nd Palmetto Cup opens on Monday

April 11, 2014

The 22nd annual Palmetto Cup soccer tournament runs Monday through Thursday at Brookland-Cayce. The elite spring break event is in its final run at The Cage facility before moving across campus to the school’s new, state-of-the art, soccer-friendly stadium on Knox Abbott Drive.

The 12-team field features just one out-of-state team – Farragut. The Tennessee school is no stranger to Cayce with the highest winning percentage of any Cup entry with at least 20 appearances (18-4-2, .792). Farragut, however, has never won a Cup title, though it did reach the finals in its first visit in 2006.

The in-state field in a strong one, including Midlands entries Irmo, Blythewood, Lexington, Dreher and host Brookland-Cayce. Irmo is making its second appearance at the Palmetto Cup, the first under new coach Matt Brophy. The defending Class 4A state champion Yellow Jackets are currently ranked No. 4 and tied for first place in Region 4-4A with sixth-ranked Blythewood. Lexington lost to Irmo in a thrilling state championship match last spring and is ranked fifth on the big school list. B-C in ranked No. 2 in Class 3A.

The field also features Wando, which is looking to become the second three-time Cup champion and the first team to win three in a row.

All games through Wednesday will be at The Cage. The Granby field will be used for some matches on Thursday.
