Hoops and Hogs Basketball Tournament: Charity basketball tournament and barbecue event benefiting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Columbia, 2 p.m. Sunday at Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center, 1000 Blossom St. Cost is $50 per five-player team. Barbecue tickets will be sold for $7 in advance or $10 at the door.


S.C. Senior Chess Championships: Saturday and April 20 at Embassy Suites Greenville Golf Resort and Conference Center. Tournament is sanctioned by U.S. Chess Federation and S.C. Chess Association. Open to all USCF members who will be at least 50 years old by the end of the year. Players from other states are welcome, but only South Carolina residents are eligible to be recognized as state champion.

Adventure Day: 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. May 9 at Sesquicentennial State Park, 9564 Two Notch Road. Check-in is at 9 a.m. Programs are trail running and walking, trail riding demo, yoga for athletes, and pre and post exercise eating plans. Cost is $85 per person. Massage therapy will also be available for $20 for 20 minutes or $30 for 30 minutes. Bring a bike helmet, sunscreen, change of clothes, yoga mat, towel and water bottle. Lunch included. Run for Your Life 5K/2-Mile Walk: 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Newberry County Memorial Hospital front parking lot, 2669 Kinard St., Newberry. Registration and packet pick-up is 7-8 a.m. Junior Jog, Easter Egg Hunt and awards ceremony will follow race. Entry fees are $25 for runners and $12 for walkers (price includes T-shirt). Quarry Crusher Run: 9 a.m. April 26 at Vulcan Quarry, 545 Georgia St. The third annual race will reach a new depth of 427 feet below the earth. Participants will race 3.72 miles at a 10 percent grade. Registration includes a T-shirt.

Festival of the Roses Road Race: May 3 at Edisto Gardens in Orangeburg. Race includes 5K, 12K, Double Down (17K) and Kids’ Fun Run. Part of the YMCA of Columbia 2014 Race Series. Register at

Prosperity’s Hoppin’ 5K Run/Walk: 8 a.m. May 3 at 250 School Drive, Prosperity. One-mile fun run open to ages 5-12. Early registration cost is $20 for the run/walk and $10 for the fun run through April 25 (includes T-shirt); race day registration is $25 for the run, $20 for the walk and $10 for the fun run.
