TRACY GLANTZ — THE STATE

— Veterans who often circle the packed parking area at Dorn VA Medical Center looking for a spot will get some relief in a couple of years.

After several years of asking, Dorn officials have received funding to build a parking garage. The three-level garage will result in a net gain of 550 spaces, according to Stan Domann, chief of engineering services.

The exact footprint of the parking garage isn’t set, but it is expected to be behind the main hospital, near the mental health building.

As is typical of government construction, however, the timetable is a long one. Design bids are expected by October 2014, and construction likely won’t begin until late 2015 or early 2016.

In the meantime, Dorn officials remind patients and their families that the valet parking service at the main entrance is free 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. Also, the lots behind the main building often aren’t full. You can park there and call (803) 695-6780 to request a shuttle to come pick you up.
