Baxter: Falcons might fly high in Region 4-3A

April 20, 2014

We continue the survey of Midlands teams and their spring preparations for the upcoming season. Today, I’ll look at Region 4-3A

With a year under coach Reggie Shaw’s system, A.C. Flora have specific needs. It needs a quarterback, but the Falcons look like the region favorite with a powerful defense, led by Rion Davis and Denzel Johnson.

A.C. Flora receiver Michael Aimone has looked good in off-season camps.

Chapin went unscathed in region play last season, but have a lot of holes to address this spring. The Eagles will have a new quarterback Jay Bailey, and he will have some talent to work with.

The Chapin trenches have voids, but Stephen Haralambis returns as an anchor on both sides.

Lower Richland has no questions on its defensive front, which is loaded and anchored by sophomore Stacey Anderson and senior Devonte Hinton. Offensively, coach Darryl Page has his work cut out for him in building an offensive line. He’s loaded at the skills positions, however, and will have sophomore athlete Larry Collins to build around.

Dreher is solid on the offensive line, where it returns all the starters. Quarterback Avery Armstrong and running back Donovan Ward should be forces. On defense, the Blue Devils will need help up front, but have Jeffrey Wider returning at nose, and Tyler Fleming and Andrew Kendrick at linebacker.

Richland Northeast drops from 4A. The Cavs played young last season and return key players on defense in linebackers TJ Brunson and Ken Furtick.

They have experience on the offensive line in three-year starter Davante Hardy and tackle Norman Wallace. Simeon Kelly should be solid at quarterback. The Cavs will be trying to build a defensive line this spring.

Jimmy Neal’s Camden Bulldogs have a lot of work to do. It will begin with the hunt for a starting quarterback while rebuilding an offensive line. The Bulldogs return tight end Chase Truesdale and running back Kendrick Slater.

Defensively, Camden must building around defensive end Welton Cauthen. Omar Mingo will lead the linebackers.
