Gilberts 6-5 win over Swansea Thursday in the final Region 5-3A baseball game of the season gives Brookland-Cayce another chance to keep alive a long streak of state playoff appearances.
Swansea would have made the playoff cut with a win. Instead, B-C and Midland Valley finish in a tie for fourth place with 3-7 region records. The Bearcats and Mustangs square off in a tiebreaker game on Friday at Gilbert. The winner advances; the loser packs it in for another year.
The teams split two games during the conference campaign.
B-C has not missed the state playoff cut in 20 years. The run began with back-to-back trips to the Class 4A playoffs (1995-96), followed by 18 straight appearances since the Bearcats moved down to 3A in 1997.
Gilbert finished with a perfect 10-0 region record, three games ahead of 2013 pennant winner Airport. Strom Thurmond went 5-5 to finish third.
