— An Orangeburg man has been arrested after he tried to evade a traffic stop and officers found drugs in his vehicle, according to Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell.

Officers say Wesley Lamonte Givens, 32, turned onto a side street in order to avoid a safety check point at Goff Avenue and Nance Street around 7:45 p.m. Thursday.

“Officers then attempted a traffic stop where Givens would not provide his driver’s license,” Sheriff Ravenell said. “The officer requested Givens to step out of the vehicle to be detained. Givens ran from the officer and the officer deployed his taser.”

After officers put Givens in a vehicle with a cage, he attempted to kick out the window and kick the officer, Ravenell said.

“Officers deployed the stun gun and Givens was then compliant to officers’ requests,” Ravenell said.

Officers found crack cocaine, oxycodone, oxycotin and a Springfield handgun during a search of Givens’ vehicle.

Givens was charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance near a school, possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person convicted of a violent felony, trafficking in meth or cocaine base, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, unlawful carring of a pistol and possession with intent to distribute.
