Defending champion Cardinal Newman opened the SCISA Class 3A boys soccer state playoffs with a 5-0 win Monday over Laurence Manning Academy at George Watson Stadium.

The Cardinals (14-6-4) take on longtime postseason foe Pinewood Prep at home on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Hammond breezed by Wilson Hall 6-0 to advance to a semifinal game at Porter-Gaud on Wednesday while Heathwood Hall and Ben Lippen had their seasons come to a close. Pinewood Prep was a 6-0 winner over Heathwood Hall and P-G took care of the Falcons, 4-1.

The girls playoffs begin on Tuesday with top-ranked Cardinal Newman (9-4-2) and defending champion Heathwood Hall (8-9-1) hosting openers. CN takes on Porter-Gaud and the Highlanders meet Ashley Hall. Hammond and Ben Lippen are on the road against Pinewood Prep and Hilton Head Christian, respectively.

James Scheuer tallied a hat trick in the CN romp. He scored back-to-back goals off assists by Jack Stricker after a LMA own goal broke the ice. Scheuer closer the first-half scoring with a rebound goal. Cam Parker found the back of the net in the second half.

Heathwood Hall hosts the four SCISA championship matches on Saturday. The 3A girls final is at 3 p.m. followed by the boys title bout at 5 p.m.
