In the face of elimination, the Airport Eagles softball team posted an 8-0 win over Hilton Head on Monday to advance in the Class 3A District 7 tournament.

The Eagles, who dropped into the losers bracket after a 1-run loss to Darlington on Friday, will host Myrtle Beach or travel to Darlington on Wednesday for a spot in the district title series.

“Coming back in today, we tried to get them out and get them moving early and, obviously, we know, you lose and it’s over,” coach Kathy Jackson said.

“There were some girls who felt like it was a new chance to get out here and see what we’ve got against a new team and stay in it, and I think some of the girls were a little bit deflated. But, hopefully, this picked them up so more. We won pretty big, so I’m hoping this will carry us into Wednesday,” she said.

Jackson pulled up some junior varsity players to add speedy baserunners into the Eagles’ mix, and got solid bunting from the young additions. The Eagles also had solid hitting, led by Chaston Huntley and Jessica Brown, who were each 3-4 with two RBIs, and had a four-run lead after three innings.

In the fourth, Huntley sent Gracey Dorn around to extend the Airport lead to 5-0. In the sixth, Dorn reached on a bunt single, and Huntley again drove in her run. Two batters later, Celsea Rivers sent home another run, and Brown closed the scoring with an RBI single over second base to set the final score.

Led by Taylor Shealy on the mound, the host Eagles held Hilton Head to five hits and ended the Seahawks’ season.

W: Taylor Shealy. L: Whitney Halley. Hitters: Chaston Huntley 3-4, 2 RBI, 2B; Celsea Rivers 2-4, RBI; Jessica Brown 3-4, 2 RBI; Gracey Dorn 2-2.
