The Buzz: Making ‘Uncle Chip’ laugh

Miss S.C. 2013 Brooke Mosteller

Miss South Carolina Brooke Mosteller has tried all her life to get a laugh out of her uncle, state Sen. Chip Campsen – a.k.a. “Uncle Sonny” for his “sunny personality,” she told The Buzz last week.

But she may only need library access to crack the veneer of the stoic Charleston Republican.

The Senate was debating Wednesday what college freshmen should be reading. The controversy arose from the College of Charleston’s selection of a graphic novel called “Fun Home” that has gay characters and an “exposed nipple” that some senators lambasted as pornography.

Campsen was musing on what he would assign freshmen to read instead. One of his favorites is “The Federalist Papers,” he said. But another suggested assignment got a chuckle out of Mosteller’s Uncle Chip: “New Ideas from Dead Economists,” Campsen said, repeating the title to hear it one more time.
