USC Graduation: Getting 3 – yes, 3 – in and out at USC

ccope@thestate.comMay 10, 2014

— Four years ago, the Harden triplets toiled in Columbia’s muggy, energy-sapping heat during USC’s move-in day in August, dragging their things into their freshman dorms.

This weekend, the three from Simpsonville graduated and are moving forward with their careers, said their father, Allan Harden.

Allison Harden studied accounting and is considering graduate school and law school.

Katy Harden studied education and is going to teach fifth grade at a magnet school in Winnsboro.

Joseph Harden studied electrical engineering and will continue his education working toward a master’s degree in the field.

The triplets’ mother died of skin cancer in their sophomore year. Though the three had wanted their independence from each other when entering college, they found strength being together during that difficult time, he said.

“(They were) able to depend on each other, to talk to, encourage and carry each other,” their father said.

He told the graduates in separate commemorative videos he made for each that he was proud of them.

“I also explained how proud their mother was looking down, gleaming with pride and with a big smile.”
