First female president of SC Morticians Association dies

— Gertrude L. Heyward, the first female president of the South Carolina Morticians Association, has died at the age of 96.

Heyward, a licensed funeral director and embalmer, was the oldest living African-American licensed embalmer in South Carolina at the time of her death.

She was managing director of G.W. Heyward’s Mortuary in Charleston.
