— A former employee of the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office was indicted last week for embezzling from the agency.

Sandra McAllister Owens, 53, of Ware Shoals is charged with embezzlement of public funds more than $10,000. The charge carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a fine. S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson announced the indictment on Monday.

The indictment, according to a press release, alleges that Owens, while an employee of the Greenwood Sheriff’s Office between February 2008 and January 2013, embezzled money and used it to pay for personal items such as food, clothing and hotel accommodations.

The case was investigated by SLED. It will be prosecuted by Assistant Deputy Attorney General Creighton Waters.
