— Two more Republican lawmakers have endorsed Meka Childs, a former education aide to former Gov. Mark Sanford, in the race for the GOP nomination for state superintendent of education.

State Sen. Tom Davis, R-Beaufort, who was Sanford’s chief of staff, and state Rep. Ralph Norman, R-York, both said they are backing Childs, who also worked under current Superintendent Mick Zais.

“I have worked in the State Senate over the past six years fighting to increase parents’ education choices for their children and having worked with Meka in Gov. Sanford’s administration, I know she is the most qualified individual to lead that same fight at the Department of Education,” Davis said in a statement.

Childs is one of eight Republican candidates seeking the party’s nominee in June.

“Meka will fight to ensure that dollars are spent on our students because our children deserve better and the taxpayers of South Carolina deserve better,” Norman said in the release.
