Friday letters: Make mental health a priority

May 16, 2014

— I want to speak out and up for those I feel have no voice. I worked as a psychiatric nurse at William S. Hall Institute and walked my patients around the campus grounds at the State Hospital. My sister was hospitalized there a few times; she died in March of 2006, from lack of mental-health care.

Our state is one of the worst for supporting mental health.

Our property taxes now give more to the zoo (of which I am a member) than mental health.

I pray that our city, which is prepared to build a baseball park on the old State Hospital property on Bull Street, will care more about mental health than sports.

Let’s help the least of these rather than give in to so much greed.
