New apartments coming to Cayce

— A new apartment complex is coming to a premier setting on Cayce’s riverfront.

Plans for a complex of about 230 units near the Blossom Street bridge have received initial approval from Cayce City Council.

The site provides a prime view both of the Congaree River and the skyline of downtown Columbia to the east.

The project would extend along Knox Abbott Drive from Axtell Drive to the city’s Riverwalk, replacing Monterrey Mexican Restaurant and the Riverside Inn, which are across the street from Guignard Park.

Construction on the complex likely will begin sometime in the fall, said project developer Hunter Gibson, of One Eleven Apartments LLC.

“It’s a vibrant spot and Cayce really has some exciting initiatives they have planned for the next couple years,” he said. “We think it’s a good corridor and one that’s underserved.”

The complex is aimed at young professionals and retirees, he said.

Cayce officials want to beautify the area with more landscaping along roads as part of an effort to encourage further commercial redevelopment near the riverfront.

The proposed complex – which still needs final approval from city council – would be the latest complex to sprout in the area, but it would have a more prominent setting than those along side roads nearby that mainly attract students attending the University of South Carolina.

The complex “makes perfect sense” for the area and would be a boost for the community and economy, said Greg Pinner, president of the West Metro Chamber of Commerce.

“Cayce is definitely an up-and-coming place,” Pinner said. “The apartment complex, I definitely think, will just add more bodies to Cayce to spend their money and eat at our restaurants and buy our gas.”

Interest in redeveloping the site has persisted for more than a decade, but the complex is the first moving forward. An effort to put a high-rise luxury condominium project on the site fell apart 14 years ago amid flood line concerns.
