Thursday letters: Atwater knows schools’ needs

.

— As a teacher with 19 years’ experience, I believe the most important event this summer is Tuesday’s primary in which teachers have the opportunity to vote for fellow teacher Sally Atwater as the Republican nominee for S.C. superintendent of education.

At the beginning of this school year, she was the only candidate for superintendent working in a classroom to better the lives of South Carolina’s children. She is a qualified, innovative and brilliant choice to lead our state’s public schools.

As a teacher, she understands what needs to be done to move our schools forward. She recognizes that we must streamline funding to get more dollars in the classroom. She knows that to recruit and retain quality teachers we must pay them more and create for them a positive working environment. And she realizes that we have a moral obligation to make all of our schools safe.

Tuesday’s primary is a defining moment for public education in South Carolina. By voting for Sally Atwater, teachers can stand up for their profession and for the future of education in our state.
