Lexington deputies investigate weekend homicide

— Detectives in Lexington County are investigating a weekend homicide that left a 22-year-old Columbia woman dead.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, at the Cockpit Bar & Grill at 214 Berryhill Road near Irmo, Shirley McKenzie was shot in the upper body and died. Lexington County Coroner Earl Wells said Monday that McKenzie died within minutes after a bullet lacerated a vital organ. Wells ruled the death a homicide.

Detectives with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, which did not notify the public of the homicide until Monday, are seeking help from the public.

According to a press release, the shooting was reported to the department at 4:32 a.m. Saturday. Deputies found McKenzie lying dead on the floor inside the bar,

A number of people were inside the bar at the time of the shooting, according to deputies. Detectives ask anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
